Consumption of alcoholic beverages in Germany - statistics & facts
Those looking to fill their wineglasses will have their choice of vineyards and brands, with Germany being among the ten leading wine producers in the world. Typically known for white wines, some well-known types include Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, and Weissburgunder. As mentioned previously, wine consumption among Germans mostly remained stable, though figures had still decreased somewhat compared to the early 2000s. However, wine was still consumed significantly more in Germany than sparkling wine.
Germany so far remains in the ranks of the leading beer drinkers in Europe as of 2022, despite consumers drinking less, sandwiched between Poland and Romania. The German market is home to such familiar brands as Krombacher, Bitburger, and Veltins, to name just a few. Krombacher, one of the largest breweries in the country, recorded the highest production volume among these, with around 5.68 million hectoliters produced in 2023. Bitburger recorded roughly 3.57 million and Veltins 3.26 million hectoliters.
The international beer market in particular is facing competition from China, which was the world's leading beer producer as of 2023, ahead of the U.S. and Brazil.
