Number of credit institutions in the UK 2008-2023
The number of monetary financial credit institutions, which include all banks and building societies that have permission to accept deposits, decreased overall between 2008 and 2023 in the United Kingdom. As of July 2023, there were 377 such institutions in the country, 19 less than in 2008. The level of decrease in the UK was slower than in the euro area, where the number of credit institutions dropped from 6,570 in 2008 to 4,039 in 2022.
