Mondelēz International set a new revenue record, exceeding all previous figures in 2023. Previously revenues had peaked in 2014 and slumped afterward, but the recovery of Mondelēz’s revenues is in full swing and has brought a new peak at 36.02 billion U.S. dollars.
This comes on the back of a long number of business acquisitions in the last few years, all focused on expanding the company’s core snack and confectionery businesses.
One of the most recent acquisitions was also among the largest. In 2022, the company bought Cliff Bar for 2.9 billion U.S. dollars. Besides company revenue, other metrics are also up, such as spending on advertising.
On an ad spending spree
Mondelēz increased its global advertising spending by almost 400 million U.S. dollars to a total of 2.06 billion dollars. It’s a significant increase of about 23 percent and exceeds the increases of past years by quite a margin, and constitutes the highest advertising expenditure in the history of the company. In the last quarter of 2023, Mondelēz Norge was the fourth-biggest advertiser in Norway. The company also was the second biggest out-of-home advertiser in Ireland. The ad performance in European countries should not surprise, as Mondelēz historically had more business in Europe than in any other region. However, over time, its North American business has increased in importance and has grown by close to four billion U.S. dollars. According to the last Mondelēz annual report, European revenues are roughly 12.86 billion U.S. dollars. This puts the European region a bit less than 1.8 billion dollars ahead of its NA business. The company’s business in Latin America and the MENA region combined account for another 12 billion. This gives the company a somewhat diversified regional footprint.Conquering the confectionery market
Mondelēz is currently the second-biggest confectionery company worldwide. Its net sales in the category amounted to over 14 billion U.S. dollars just ahead of Ferrero but over seven billion U.S. dollars behind market leader Mars.
