Augmented reality at your fingertips
Among the aforementioned new technologies is AR, or augmented reality. While AR technology on its own has been around for decades, the use of AR in retail e-commerce has only recently gained traction. Allowing for consumers to use their smart devices to view realistic previews of products from the comfort of their homes, AR has become a desired feature for online shoppers globally. In the United States nearly four in ten consumers reported wanting to use AR features when buying products online in 2023. Simultaneously, about 70 percent of U.S. apparel shoppers were open to using augmented reality technology for trying on clothes and shoes. The top shopping apps and their users
Mobile shopping apps have become must-haves for many retailers and are immensely popular among users. Among the top shopping apps in the country, the mobile apps for U.S. based companies Amazon and Walmart have implemented AR technology for the shopping experience of their users. On both apps, AR viewing is available for products like furniture and other home décor. Despite these features, however, the Amazon and Walmart apps still rank third and fourth respectively when looking at the most downloaded shopping apps in the U.S. in 2023. Ranked number one in the same year, the Chinese app Temu has risen to extraordinary levels of popularity since its initial release in 2022, and consistently reaches millions of downloads each month from U.S. mobile shoppers. In second was another Chinese retailers' app – the fast-fashion store Shein, the front-runner in the fashion and beauty shopping app category. As for who exactly is using these apps, shoppers from the ages 18 to 34 make up the majority, and within these age groups, most consumers tend to engage in m-commerce with their smartphones rather than their tablets. And although younger shoppers are more likely to shop from their phones, older shoppers are not excluded, with just over eight percent of U.S. m-commerce shoppers being 55 and older.
From buying at the tap of a finger to virtual try-ons, with how convenient m-commerce has become, shoppers of all demographics are bound to continue using their mobile devices while shopping online.
