A growing bicycle market driven by e-bike adoption
Danes are not only the most enthusiastic cyclists among Nordic countries, but they also spend the most on new bicycles. In 2022,
Danes spent an average of over 1,900 euros per new bike, while the average new bike in Finland cost only around half of that. The average price is calculated among all new cycles, which includes e-bikes and cargo bikes, which are particularly popular in Denmark but come with significantly higher price tags than traditional bikes.
44 percent of all new bikes sold in Denmark were e-bikes in 2022, and around a quarter of all families with two children in Copenhagen now own a cargo bike.
Norwegians: Less likely to cycle but most likely to scoot
While Norway trails its other Nordic neighbors in cycling, it has taken the lead in adopting e-scooters. Nine percent of Norwegian consumers indicated in 2022 that
they used an e-scooter at least once per week. Next to Norway, Sweden has emerged as another major adopter of e-scooters. While Swedes are less likely to ride an e-scooter weekly, they are more likely to own an e-scooter than Norwegians. Sweden also has the largest e-scooter-sharing market in the Nordics, though the
per-user revenue in the e-scooter-sharing market remained highest in Norway in 2022. From 2023 onwards, however, Fins are projected to generate the highest revenue per user. Denmark is the most challenging market for e-scooters, with the existing high level of bicycle adoption likely leaving less space for alternative micro-mobility solutions.
