PCs in Brazil - statistics & facts
Working, studying, watching movies in comfort, either on the desk or on the couch – this has not always been possible. With the advancement of technology, the computing market has quickly developed, becoming one of the most profitable tech markets all around the world, including Brazil. In the Latin American country, the PC hardware market has fluctuated over the past years. Particularly, after reaching a peak in 2021, the size of this market slightly decreased, totaling revenues of just over ten billion U.S. dollars in 2023. However, the revenue generated by this industry and its subsegments is forecast to start growing again in the coming years.
Laptops dominate the Brazilian PC hardware market
The computing industry encompasses many different segments, from desktop PCs, laptops, and tablets to computer peripherals, such as keyboards, printers, and storage units. Over the past decades, because of their benefits in capabilities, size, and portability, laptops have been increasing in popularity over desktop PCs. This resulted in a great increase of the laptop market revenue worldwide and in Brazil, as well as in laptop shipments. Indeed, laptops are the most profitable PC hardware segment in the Latin American country, totaling revenues of over three billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Tablets also play a significant role in the industry, but Brazilians seem to prefer traditional laptops – a tendency shown by the decrease in tablet sales in the country in the past few years in favor of notebooks.Tech giants dwelling for leadership of the Brazilian PC market
Similarly, in the other consumer electronics markets, such as the smartphone and wearable industries, the well-known tech giants, for example America’s Apple and the Korea’s Samsung, are among the key players of the Brazilian PC market. However, they are not always those taking leadership; that depends rather on the specific sub-market taken into account. For instance, Apple rules over the laptop market in the Portuguese-speaking country, and yet it makes up only two percent of the Brazilian desktop PC market, leaving the first places to Acer and Asus. As for operating systems, the predominance of one or the other depends on the device considered. In particular, Windows accounts for over 90 percent of the desktop OS in the country, while other operating systems like MacOS and Linux hold much lower shares. Yet, when it comes to tablet operating systems, Apple plays a bigger role in the market, occupying just under 25 percent of it – only second to Android, which has been its leader for several years and dominated over 75 percent of the market share in 2022.
