Alcoholic beverage market in the Asia-Pacific region - statistics & facts
What do Asia-Pacific consumers drink?
Beer is widely enjoyed in the Asia-Pacific region and takes up a significant market share in nearly all markets. China, Japan, and India are among the largest beer markets in the world. Beer generates more than half the alcoholic beverages market revenue in many countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea. Both domestic and international beer brands compete for market share. Popular domestic beer brands include Asahi and Kirin in Japan, Bia Saigon in Vietnam, and Snow in China. On the other hand, wine has a strong presence in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Both production and consumption levels of wine were lower than other segments but are slowly increasing across the region due to a growing wine culture.
The spirits, or hard liquor, market generates the most revenue in Asia and offers the most diverse and vast selection of traditional alcoholic beverages. Baijiu generates the most revenue in China, while a type of light-aroma baijiu – kaoliang – is most common in Taiwan. A distilled alcoholic drink made from the fermented sap of coconut flowers or sugarcane, arrack, is a Sri Lankan staple. Whiskey is widely enjoyed in Thailand and India, while brandy is popular in the Philippines.
