Besides being a retail giant dominating the food and grocery market in the United States, Walmart is an established omnichannel retailer. At the beginning of the new millennium, the brick-and-mortar company launched e-commerce operations. Since then, the online business has become so successful that Walmart is now in the top five online stores worldwide, by revenue.

Walmart’s e-commerce business

In 2022, generalist marketplace walmart.com totaled revenue worth nearly 54 billion U.S. dollars, with the United States remaining the core market of the e-commerce business. The increasing online sales registered over the last financial years led to expanding e-commerce logistics. Walmart relies heavily on its existing physical stores network for order fulfillment, even though the number of e-commerce-dedicated distribution centers increased in the U.S. as well as abroad. The online business proves to be profitable for numerous online sellers, too. In the United States, over one-third of Walmart sellers earned 50,000 to one million U.S. dollars from e-commerce sales. The encouraging business prospects explain why the number of sellers more than tripled between 2020 and 2022.

Rivalry with Amazon

In the United States, Amazon is Walmart’s biggest competitor. Like Amazon, Walmart offers a subscription-based membership called Walmart+, which entails multiple benefits. According to recent surveys, free shipping and exclusive rewards appealed more to millennials and consumers with annual incomes above 100,000 U.S. dollars. Online sales of the two companies are not comparable, as Walmart is primarily an omnichannel retailer strongly anchored to physical retail. Due to that, Walmart outdoes Amazon in the food and beverage segment. In turn, Amazon is the undisputed leader in consumer electronics.

Meaningful investments

Walmart's acquisitions go towards innovation and e-commerce expansion. After the 2018 deal securing ownership of online retailer Flipkart, Walmart acquired Alert Innovation, a startup specialized in delivery automation technologies, in 2022. Over the last few years, Walmart has been investing highly in retail technology, spending 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in supply chain and omnichannel fulfillment solutions in 2022 alone. It is a sign that the online marketplace is being integrated more with the in-store business.
