In the fall of 2021, about 95,715 students who were enrolled exclusively in distance education courses in postsecondary institutions were located outside of the United States. This is compared to 3.85 million students who were located in the same state as the institution, but enrolled in exclusively distance education courses. This high level of enrollment in distance learning courses is due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
