Online grocery shopping spending South Korea 2019

According to a survey conducted in January 2019, around 39.1 percent of respondents reported to spend around 20 to 40 thousand South Korean won per online grocery order.

Coupang

According to the same survey, the most popular online grocery shopping website among surveyed was Coupang. Coupang was founded in 2010 and is a leading online shopping website. They are known for their fast deliveries, offering same-day and next-day delivery. In 2018, the number of items available for next-day delivery amounted to around five million products. In 2019, the company’s consolidated sales revenue amounted to around 7.14 trillion South Korean won.

COVID-19

During the survey, around 28.9 percent of online grocery shoppers stated that they mostly shopped for groceries in physical stores. Nevertheless, online grocery shopping became increasingly important in beginning 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of May 2020, around 35 percent of respondents in a survey stated to purchase more online than before. Shoppers were especially interested buying frozen food, snacks, as well as dry food items.
