In 2023, South Africa's diamond production amounted to 5.9 million carats. This was a notable decrease compared to the previous year, whereby the production value was 9.6 million carats. The country ranked fifth as the world's largest diamond producer by volume.
South Africa maintains global presence in the diamond industry
South Africa was the fourth highest diamond-producing country in Africa. It had a total of close to six million carats worth of diamond production in 2023. On a global scale, South Africa covered 13 percent of the world’s diamond production. As one of the world's largest producers of diamonds, South Africa has been a significant player in the global diamond industry for many decades. Furthermore, the total revenue of South Africa’s mining industry was 654 billion South African rand in 2023.
South Africa dominates the African mining industry with Anglo-American Platinum leading the way
Of Africa’s leading mining companies, nine out of ten leading mining companies come from South Africa. Anglo-American Platinum was the largest mining company as of 2021, with a revenue of above 11 billion U.S. dollars. In 2023, the company held the second-highest position on the continent in terms of market capitalization, which reached approximately 10.53 billion U.S. dollars.
