Most popular music apps in South Korea 2022

According a survey among users of paid music platforms in June 2022, the most popular music application in South Korea was Melon, with roughly 52.7 percent of respondents answering that way. Melon, which is an abbreviation for “Melody On”, is a Korean streaming service and as such offers a lot of Korean music, which is the preferred music genre among South Koreans.

How do South Koreans listen to music?

Smartphones were the most commonly used devices to listen to music in South Korea in 2020. This might be one of the reasons for the popularity of music streaming applications, seeing as streaming music online was the most common way to consume music in South Korea.
Although 39.5 percent of respondents in a survey conducted in 2021 on the frequency of using music streaming services answered to use those services almost every day, the majority of South Koreans were not willing to pay more than 30 thousand South Korean won per month for a subscription service.

Melon’s user base

Streaming service Melon was the most popular paid streaming service among South Korean in their twenties in 2022. This is reflected in the total user distribution of the Melon app, as people in their twenties had the overall highest user share.
