Turmeric exports from the UK

Turmeric is a flowering plant and part of the ginger family. It is used in cooking in various cultures, particularly in South-East Asian dishes, where the plant is native. Exports of ginger, saffron, turmeric, thyme, bay leaves and curry from the United Kingdom have continuously increased between 2001 and 2017, before slightly declining in recent years. In 2022, the value of exports amounted to approximately 22 million British Pounds, as compared to 11 million British pounds in 2001.

The main importer of turmeric is the United States. In 2020, imports of turmeric in the United States were valued at approximately 47 million U.S. dollars. The second and third largest importers of turmeric are the United Kingdom and Germany, which imported approximately 17 and 15 million U.S. dollars worth of turmeric, respectively. For the worldwide leading importer of turmeric, the United States, the value of imports from India amounts to approximately 31 million U.S. dollars. After India, the countries from which the United States imports the second and third largest amounts of turmeric are Fiji and China, with import values of nearly nine and two million U.S. dollars, respectively.
