Students with federal loans for higher education U.S. 2023, by repayment status
As of the second quarter of the fiscal year of 2023, about one percent of federal education loan recipients in the United States were in repayment. A further 62 percent of student loans were in forbearance. This is due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, where the U.S. Congress moved student loans into forbearance in order to alleviate the financial impact of the pandemic on borrowers.
