Organic agricultural land area in Finland 2013-2023
Finland's organic agricultural sector has shown growth over the past decade, with the land area dedicated to organic cultivation expanding from 206,170 hectares in 2013 to 311,498 hectares in 2023. This increase reflects a growing commitment to sustainable farming practices in the Nordic country, despite its challenging climate conditions.
Regional distribution of organic farmland
The distribution of organic farmland across Finland varies significantly by region. Northern Ostrobothnia leads with nearly 38,000 hectares of organic agricultural land, closely followed by Varsinais-Suomi with about 35,300 hectares. In contrast, Lapland, the northernmost region, has a considerably smaller organic farming area of approximately 4,043 hectares. These regional differences highlight the diverse agricultural landscape of Finland and the adaptation of organic farming to local conditions.
Diversification in organic production
Finland's organic sector is diversifying beyond traditional field crops. The land area dedicated to organic horticulture production increased from 777 hectares in 2014 to 1,258 hectares in 2023. Notably, in 2023, 900 hectares were specifically used for growing organic berries. This trend towards diversification is further exemplified by the significant growth in organic oat production, which reached 37,000 hectares by 2023.
