Number of Espresso House stores 2020, by country

Espresso House is a coffeehouse chain that sells espresso-based coffee beverages as well as brewed coffee, sandwiches, salads and pastries, among others. The Swedish company operates the coffee-chain throughout Europe and employed on average 1,697 people in 2018.  Distributed by Nordic country, the number of stores was by far highest in Sweden, reaching 261 stores in 2020. In this year, Espresso House operated 65 stores in Denmark, 58 stores in Norway and 51 stores in Finland.

 Competitor: Starbucks

     In 2018, the coffee-chain Starbucks from the United States expanded to approximately 29 thousand stores worldwide. As of July 2018, 69 of these were located in the Nordic countries. In Norway, there were 24 Starbucks stores in operation, followed by 21 stores in Denmark, 15 stores in Sweden and nine stores in Finland.

 Coffee consumption 

     Among the Nordic countries, the per capita consumption volume of coffee was highest in Finland. In 2017, Fins consumed 12 kilograms per person. By comparison, Norway made the second place in the ranking, reaching a per capita consumption volume of 9.9 kilograms of coffee. Close to it was Iceland, followed by Denmark and Sweden.
