In the 28 United Kingdom general elections that have taken place since 1918, the Labour Party have consistently had the highest vote share in Wales with the exception of 1918 when they received the second highest share of votes. In that year, the popular Welsh Prime Minister, Lloyd George stood as a candidate for the Liberal Party and secured almost half of all votes in Wales. Since the 1970s Plaid Cymry (Party for Wales) has managed to earn between 14 and 7 percent of the votes in Wales.
