The value of the Canadian apparel market was estimated to be worth approximately 35 billion Canadian dollars in 2023. This figure is estimated to increase to around 38.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2027. Who are the key players in the market?

The largest specialist apparel retail chain in Canada by number of outlets in 2023 was Mark's. The Canadian chain, which sells casual clothing and workwear, had 380 retail outlets. This was almost 60 stores more than second-placed Ardene. Reitmans made up the top three chains, with 235 outlets. Despite having the most stores, Mark's was ranked fourth when it came to the dollar sales share of apparel retailers in Canada. Winners was the leading apparel retailer in Canada in this regard, with a 7.6 percent share. Winners is owned by TJX companies, which has discount clothing stores around the world. Walmart accounted for 5.9 percent of the Canadian apparel market that year.

Trade

In 2022, Canada imported far more apparel than it exported. Total imports came to roughly 17.5 billion Canadian dollars. The largest category of imports was women's and girls' clothing, which was worth roughly 6.7 billion dollars. Men's and boys' clothing imports were worth over five billion Canadian dollars. In comparison, Canada exported approximately 710 million dollars' worth of men's and boys' clothing, and 770 million dollars; worth of women's and girls' clothing.
