The chemical manufacturing industry released the largest amount of chemicals covered by the U.S. EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program to the atmosphere in the United States in 2021, at around 29 percent. The paper manufacturing industry followed second, accounting for an additional 20 percent of the chemical waste air releases. That year, a total of 571 million pounds of TRI-listed chemicals were managed through on-site air releases in the U.S.
