Aldi sales growth year-on-year in Great Britain 2014-2024
In the twelve weeks ending September 1, 2024, Aldi's sales increased by 1.3 percent when compared to the corresponding period a year earlier. The cost of living crisis and subsequent changes in grocery shopping behavior could be responsible for the high levels of growth seen at the beginning of 2023.
Aldi’s rise on the British grocery market
Between January 2015 and September 2022, Aldi was able to expand its market share on the grocery market from 4.9 to 9.3 percent. This meant that Aldi overtook Morrisons as the grocery store with the fourth largest market share in the UK for the first time. During the same time period, all supermarkets with a higher market share lost percentage points. Furthermore, compared with other supermarket brands Aldi was the most popular in the UK in 2023.
Aldi Süd store coverage
Between 2013 and 2022 Aldi Süd store numbers in the UK grew by roughly 86 percent, coming to a total of 960 stores in 2022. Aldi Süd’s store numbers have been growing in all regions the discounter operates, such as Germany and Ireland.
