There were 131 operational natural gas rigs in the United States at the end of May 2024. The Haynesville field located in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas houses the highest number of active rigs, at 36 units. By comparison, the number of U.S. oil rigs was more than four times the number of natural gas rigs.
