In 2023, the sales volume of whiskey in the United States amounted to 4.6 million 9 liter cases. The number of cases sold had increased with each consecutive year until 2023.
Straight vs. blended whiskey
In 2022, retail dollar sales of straight American whiskey in the United States amounted to approximately 11.9 billion U.S. dollars, while retail sales of blended American whiskey exceeded the one-billion-dollar mark. Blended whiskey is a mixture that can include various other ingredients, colorings, etc., but must contain a minimum of 20 percent whiskey. A straight whiskey does not contain many modifications, and the distilled beverage cannot exceed the 80 percent alcohol by volume (abv) limit.
Whiskey introductions
In 2022, 147 new American whiskey products was introduced on the U.S. market. The number of U.S. whiskeys being introduced has grown significantly since 2016. The United States also saw the arrival of 17 products from the Irish whiskey category in 2022.
