In a 2017 survey of more than 1,000 adults, respondents were asked about their attitudes towards the food they eat. It was found that of the given options the attitude that applied the most was to try to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, with a share of 92 percent.
Fruit and vegetable consumption
As of 2016/2017, the average purchase per person per week of vegetables (excluding potatoes) amounted 2.2 kilograms. This was the largest volume since 2011. However, this is noticeably less than the average purchase volume seen in 2006. In the same year, approximately 41 percent of the UK ate 1 to 2 pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, with 36 percent eating 4 to 5 pieces a day.
Increasing support for environmental packaging
Attitudes towards packaging have changed in recent years, with the share of people who try to buy brands of food that use environmentally sensitive packaging rising to almost 50 percent. As concerns over plastic waste rise, there is support for the introduction of plastic free aisles in supermarkets. In 2018, the supermarket with the most wildly recyclable packaging was Morrisons, with a share of 81 percent.
