Poultry production in the Netherlands 2010-2021
Trends in the poultry industry
In 2021, there were just under 625 companies in the Netherlands with broiler chickens. Together, these companies kept close to 47 million animals. This came down to roughly 75,500 broilers per company. In the last decade, the poultry industry in the country has scaled up considerably: the number of companies has declined, and the remaining companies have taken in a larger number of animals per farm.
Poultry consumption
Poultry is the second-most popular type of meat in the Netherlands, after pork. In 2020, the per capita consumption of poultry amounted to 22 kilos, more than the consumption of beef, veal, sheep, goat and horse meat combined. The pork consumption amounted to roughly 36 kilos per person per year. In total, the Dutch consumed approximately 76 kilos of meat per capita in 2020.
