In 2022, over 512 million British pounds was spent by UK consumers on sandwiches, rolls, and baguettes (SRB). This was a large increase in value of roughly 66 million in comparison to the previous year. After a drop in spending in 2020, spending has been on an increase for two consecutive years in a row. John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich and to whom the product is named after may have only dreamt that the sandwich would be so popular one day.
SRB consumption habits
While the numbers above are significant, they pale in comparison to the overall spending on retail and convenience. In 2016, the spending on SRB via these channels amounted to 2.33 billion pounds. This has been the smallest amount spent, if compared to the five years prior. The frequency of people buying sandwiches to eat at work is shrinking among adults in Britain. Furthermore, at home consumption via sandwich makers seems to also be shrinking since less and less households own sandwich makers.
