In 2023, imported movies accounted for around 16.2 percent of the total box office revenue in China, after the lowest point a year prior. Compared to a decade ago, slightly less than half of the cinema ticket sales revenue in the country were generated from domestically produced movies.

As of 2011,China Film Administration adopted the term "box office in China" instead of the earlier used "urban box office in China". It has not clarified if the box office revenue covers urban areas of China as it did until 2010.
