¹ In 2018 the museum - formerly known as the "Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture" - was renamed the "Smithsonian American Art Museum (with the Renwick Gallery)". Prior to 2018, it housed two Smithsonian Institution museums: the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The 2018 figure excludes the National Portrait Gallery but includes the Renwick Gallery. In 2018, the numbers for each museum were independently collected, which may allow for some differences in results.Â
² All Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo closed to the public on March 14, 2020, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The museums and the National Zoo reopened in phases starting in May 2021 with timed tickets and a limited schedule.
