In the fiscal year of 2021, about 171,863 people who lived in the state of California were naturalized as U.S. citizens, the most out of any state. Florida, New York, Texas, and New Jersey rounded out the top five states for naturalizations in that year. The total number of naturalizations in FY 2021 amounted to 813,861 persons.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and
responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. citizens, including the right to vote.
The fiscal year is the accounting period for the federal government which begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends.
