The graph shows the quarterly registered unemployment rate in urban regions of China from the second quarter of 2018 to the fourth quarter of 2021 and the surveyed urban unemployment rate since the first quarter of 2022 with an approximate figure for Q4 2021. During the second quarter of 2023, around 5.2 percent of the Chinese urban labor force had been unemployed. The monthly surveyed unemployment rate of urban areas in China ranged at 5.2 percent in August 2023. The figures of the monthly surveyed unemployment rate indicate that surveyed unemployment in the fourth quarter of 2021 had ranged between 4.9 and 5.1 percent.

* In Q1 2022, the methodology for calculating the unemployment rate has changed. While the figures were formerly based on registered unemployment, they are now based on surveyed unemployment, which is generally higher. However, the new figures provide a more accurate picture of the real size of existing unemployment.
