Anadarko Petroleum Corporation
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation was founded in 1959 and is based in Texas. The company was established after the discovery of natural gas in the Anadarko Basin. Anadarko is an oil and gas exploration company and one of the largest production companies in the world. In 2018, there were about 4,700 employees working for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, down from 6,100 employees in 2014. The company had been rated among the top employers in Denver and one of the best large companies to work for in the Houston area. On an international scale, Anadarko produces oil and natural gas in Algeria, Ghana, and China, and also deals with exploration operations in some other countries.Anadarko faced controversy due to its association with BP in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. However, a federal judge has deemed that Anadarko was not culpable in the well-drilling operations that led to the environmental disaster. As of April 2014, BP faced about 17 billion U.S. dollars in civil fines for the damage. In 2014, Anadarko and the U.S. federal government have also signed one of the largest settlements in history at 5.15 billion U.S. dollars for environmental contamination. A majority of the settlement money will be funded into environmental cleanups and to settle other claims from contamination. The cleanup occured across 22 states and the Navajo Nation.
