In 2023 in the United States, 12 people were murdered by their employer. However, 3,527 people were killed by an acquaintance compared to 1,674 who were killed by a stranger.

Number of murders in the United States by relationship of victim to offender in 2023
The relationship categories of husband and wife include both common-law and ex-spouses. The categories of mother, father, sister, brother, son, and daughter include stepparents, stepchildren, and stepsiblings. The category of acquaintance includes the composite category of other known to victim. The category of boyfriend and girlfriend include same-sex relationships.
Due to the FBI's transition to a new crime reporting system, not all law enforcement agencies submitted crime data to the FBI for 2023. As a result, figures may not accurately reflect the total number of crimes.
