Wastewater treatment revenues in the United States have more than doubled since the turn of the century and amounted to 65.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. Wastewater treatment facilities purify contaminated water by removing bacteria and other harmful pollutants before it is returned safely back into the environment.

One of the leading water and sewer utilities in the U.S. is the American Water Works Company. The New Jersey based utility recorded a sales revenue of 3.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. In the same year, American Water generated 167 million U.S. dollars in wastewater revenues.

Rising water costs in the U.S.

The cost of water in the U.S. has increased massively over the past decade, with the average monthly bills in some cities rising by more than 100 percent since 2010. The countries aging and sub-standard water infrastructure is a leading factor for the increase in water and sewer bills.
