According to a survey conducted in 2023, 88.8 percent of Democrats and 76.5 percent of Republicans were supportive of a policy temporarily prohibiting a person subject to a domestic violence protection order (DVPO) from having a gun in the United States. Federal law prohibits anyone under a DVPO, often known as a restraining order to protect victims of domestic abuse, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. In that same year, 34.6 percent of Republicans were also in support of a policy allowing a legal gun owner to carry a loaded, concealed handgun without a license, compared to only 12.3 percent of Democrats.
