Fraud, blackmail, and emotional deception have been more prevalent than ever before on online dating platforms. In a survey conducted among young singles in China in May 2024, two-thirds of respondents believed that those who do not trust that scammers are common are more likely to fall victim to romance scams. However, only a third of survey participants would refuse directly when they were asked to lend money or to take part in an investment by their matches from dating apps and match-making sites.
Commonly believed factors to fall victim to online dating scams in China in 2024
This question was phrased by the source as follows: “What are the circumstances that make it easy to fall victim to online dating scams?”
Multiple answers were possible.
Among the young singles participating in the survey, 36.3 percent lived in first-tier cities, 38.2 percent in second-tier cities, 19.7 percent in third- and fourth-tier cities, 4.4 percent in towns or counties, and 1.4 percent in villages. Men accounted for 38.5 percent and women 61.5 percent. 19.3 percent were born after 2000, 60.3 percent were born between 1990 and 1999, and 20.4 percent were born between 1980 and 1989.
