In 2022, China exported 1.6 million metric tons of used cooking oil. At the same time, 2.38 million metric tons of used cooking oil were used for biodiesel production. The large supply of feedstock for SAF means that the country has the potential to cover its domestic sustainable aviation fuel demands. Following IATA requirements, jet fuel will need to contain 65% sustainable aviation fuel, which would translate to 86 million metric tons, However, the projected production in China in 2050 is only going to reach 82 million metric tons.
