Private financing of political parties in Italy 2016-2023
After the abolition of public financing in Italy, political parties can fundraise only through private contributions and donations. The amount of money that Italian taxpayers decided to allocate to political associations has constantly increased. In fact, parties received almost twelve million euros in 2016, but citizens earmarked beyond 24 million euros in 2023 for political factions, more than the double compared to 2016. The Democratic Party has always been the largest recipient of the private funding mechanism, and it was able to collect 8.1 million euros in 2023, 3.3 million euros more than the ruling party Brothers of Italy.
