From 2000 to 2022, the majority of active shooters in education settings in the United States were male, with 49 active shooters in elementary and secondary schools and 17 active shooters at postsecondary institutions identifying as male. In comparison, only two active shooters at both elementary and secondary schools and at postsecondary institutions in the United States identified as female within the provided time period. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), an active shooter is defined as "one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area."
