The world's production of conventional natural gas totaled 2,871 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2022, while that of unconventional gas amounted to 1,266 bcm. Global production of both types of gas are projected to reach a combined output of 4,300 bcm in 2030 under a stated policies (STEP) scenario, which is based on current policies and those under development. However, total production would drop to some 3,400 bcm under a net-zero emissions by 2050 scenario. The same scenario would see net trade of liquified natural gas increase globally between 2022 and 2030.
