As of 2021, the majority of mentally ill patients in Ghana, over 6,000, suffered from epilepsy. This is a neurological disorder that brings about recurring seizures. Moreover, around 3,000 patients had schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders. Other common conditions of mental illness in the country included mental disorders due to alcohol or psychoactive substance use, depression, anxiety, and dementia. In 2021, more than 48.1 thousand cases of mental illness were registered in facilities under the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
