A 2023 survey found that one in two young people in Hong Kong read books without considering additional benefits. They did so either when they had found a suitable book or for enjoyment and relaxation. Another most cited reason was to learn and gain knowledge.

The average age of respondents was 17.5 years old. Male respondents accounted for 47.3%. About 65.6% of respondents had a secondary school degree whereas the rest achieved a bachelor degree or above. About 84.1% of respondents were born in Hong Kong.
