The net profit of the banking industry in Italy fluctuated significantly between 2014 and 2024. The lowest value was recorded in the last quarter of 2016, when the banking sector reported a net loss of more than 14.72 billion euros. Since then, it has only recorded a loss of 844 million euros in the first quarter of 2020. Despite these fluctuations, it recovered again, reaching its peak in the fourth quarter of 2023, at approximately 31.13 billion euros. After a stark decline in the first quarter of 2024, it increased again, amounting to 18.83 billion euros in the second quarter of the same year.
