In a recent study investigating the detection frequency of various PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) among U.S. adults living in San Diego and Orange counties in California, PFHxS, PFNA, PFOA, and PFOS exhibited high detection rates, with percentages ranging from 92.1 percent to 97.8 percent, indicating widespread presence in the population. Although many of the other PFAS investigated also demonstrated significant detection frequencies, several chemicals investigated were detected at lower rates, indicating comparatively less occurrence among the tested respondents.

The CARE-3 study ended prematurely as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) containment measures, leading to a reduced participant count, with only 90 individuals successfully completing all study procedures.
