Teflon, while being a highly useful product, uses perfluorooctanoic acid (or PFOA), also known as C-8, as on the of the main compounds in its formulation. Proven toxic to humans by 1982, significant traces of C-8 were found in the local water supply close to the Parkersburg manufacturing site of Dupont, in Virginia. This incident was linked to several cases of leukemia among the employees of the company. In 2017, as part of a lawsuit filled on behalf of Parkersburg residents against the company several years prior, DuPont paid around 677 million U.S. dollars to settle the case.
