In 2022, approximately 72 percent of survey respondents in the United States (U.S.) stated that they support giving surplus food that is left at the end of the day to charity organizations. Nearly five percent of respondents strongly supported throwing the food away, while a much higher share of 58 percent strongly supported giving it to the staff of the respective establishments for free.

Respondents were asked the following question:
"Sometimes food establishments have surplus food at the end of the day that is approaching its expiration date but is still edible. Would you support or oppose
the food establishments doing the following with the food?"
