A 2022 survey revealed Gen Z and millennials from Hong Kong were worried that stricter regulations might be applied on social media in the near future to limit the freedom of speech. Among the international social media platforms, Instagram and YouTube were the most irreplaceable ones among Hong Kong users, with 55 percent and 60 percent of respondents saying they would use a VPN or keep using them if the access happens to be restricted. Facebook and WhatsApp appeared to be less indispensable in the survey.
