More than 40 million people in the United States, in over 2,000 communities, are drinking water with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) levels above the new EPA lifetime health advisories (LHAs). There were 1,781 drinking water systems where PFOA was detected in levels above the new LHAs of 0.004 parts per trillion (ppt).
PFAS are a class of thousands of chemicals that have been used in consumer products since the 1940s. They are often used to make water, stain, and heat resistant products. PFAS are known as forever chemicals because they do not break down naturally and are linked to a number of health problems, such as cancer, liver problems, and kidney disease.
