The Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) compound with the highest number of detections in surface water samples across the United States in 2022 was Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFOS was detected in 159 out of 228 surface water samples, while PFOA was detected in 158. This was a detection frequency of approximately 70 percent for both compounds.
PFAS are a class of chemicals that are often used to make water, stain, and heat resistant products. They are known as forever chemicals because they do not break down naturally and are linked to a number of health problems, such as cancer, liver problems, and kidney disease.
