From 1980 to 2020, more than 1,200 flood fatalities were recorded in Turkey, accounting for nearly half of the almost 3,000 fatalities taking place across 11 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region (including Israel). Italy followed in second during the studied period, with 425 fatalities. Being dragged by water was the main circumstance of flood death among analyzed cases.

The study considered 2,875 fatalities recorded in Cyprus, Czechia, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Portugal,Turkey, United Kingdom, the Spanish regions of Balearic Islands and Catalonia, and the Mediterranean regions of South France.
