Naked Wines company profile
Headquartered in Norwich, United Kingdom, Naked Wines plc is an online-only wine retailer founded in 2008 by Rowan Gormley. In 2015, the company was acquired by Majestic Wine, a UK-based brick-and-mortar wine retailer. With its unique business model, Naked Wines recorded worldwide sales revenues exceeding 354 million British pounds in 2023, marking a significant increase from only 178 million in revenues only three years prior in 2019.
Online retail meets independent winemaking
Naked Wines’ business model aims to bypass middlemen and connect customers directly with independent winemakers. Its network of subscribers – dubbed ‘Angels’ – contribute a monthly fee that can be redeemed for discounts, exclusive wine offers and freebies. These fees are mainly used to support and expand a network of independent and talented winemakers hailing from all over the world. With around 867,000 paying members, or ‘Angels’, the online retailer’s business model is proving to be successful among wine lovers in all three of the markets it operates in. While the company was the leading wine & liquor online store in the UK in 2022, Naked Wines’ U.S. sales revenue exceeded that of its home market, solidifying its popularity across the North Atlantic.
