Between 2006 and 2008, the average age of French retirees covered by the general pension system decreased by about one and a half month, from 72.84 years to 72.71 years. It has since gradually increased for both women and men. However, retired women were older on average than their male counterparts. Over the 2006-2021 period, the gap between the average age of men and women retirees ranged from one and a half year to two years and five months. This gap has never been as narrow as it was in 2020.
In 2021, the average age of retirement was 62.9 years old.
